Domestiques, sprinters and climbers: who’s who in the Tour de France peloton (and why it matters)

The Tour de France is one of the most physically demanding sporting contests in the world.
It’s an event made up of many priorities. One of the most intriguing elements
is the “peloton” – the main group of competitors riding closely together in a pack.
Riding in such a tight bunch helps reduce wind resistance for those in the middle or rear – but it’s chaotic and dangerous and involves plenty of cycling politics.
The races within the race
At the Tour de France, general classification contenders compete for the yellow jersey, awarded to the rider with the lowest cumulative time.
Sprinters target the green jersey through the points competition, while climbers pursue the polka-dot jersey. Teams also compete for individual stage victories and tactical objectives.
The 2026 men’s tour began with 184 riders in 23 teams of eight, while the Tour de France Femmes will feature 154 riders in 22 teams of seven.
All riders enter as members of a team – there are no independent competitors.
Only a handful of riders have a realistic chance of overall victory.
Different riders, different roles
Riders are selected and train for different tasks.
Sprinters develop explosive power and speed, climbers prioritise low body mass and sustained power on steep gradients, while time-trial specialists focus on aerodynamics and maintaining high output.
“Domestiques” – riders who sacrifice their chances of winning to support their leaders and teams – are valued for durability, tactical awareness and the ability to repeat hard efforts.
Each rider’s role is tactical and may change as the race unfolds.
These roles are shaped by months of specialised preparation. Climbers spend weeks at altitude while carefully managing body mass. Sprinters devote time to strength and high-intensity power, while domestiques prepare to absorb repeated workloads and recover quickly across three weeks of racing.
But the tour largely plays out within the peloton, which can reach speeds in excess of 50 kilometres per hour on flat roads and twice that on descents.
How the peloton functions
The peloton is a shifting social system shaped by hierarchy, alliances and rivalries.
Riding in the peloton reduces aerodynamic drag because those at the front and exposed edges absorb more of the wind, while those tucked inside the group expend less energy maintaining the same speed.
Those near the front can respond quicker when gaps open and see hazards earlier, making them less vulnerable to the chain reaction of a crash. Things might be easier at the back but the risk is being taken down if someone crashes in front of them.
The consequences can be decisive. On stage 15 of the 2026 Tour, race leader Tadej Pogačar’s closest rival Jonas Vingegaard was caught in a multi-rider crash and fractured his collarbone. It ended his race while he sat second.
Because being at the front exposes riders to the wind, teams rely on domestiques to spend their energy in support of a leader. Depending on tactics, they may ride at the front to set the pace or chase a breakaway, position themselves ahead of a leader to shelter them from the wind or guide them through a nervous bunch. Their own result is often unremarkable, but the team’s success depends on this largely invisible work.
Who receives support can change depending on team priorities and the terrain of the stage.
The 2026 men’s tour covers more than 3,300 kilometres across flat, hilly and mountain stages, as well as team and individual time trials.
On flat stages, sprinters are supported by lead-out riders and given priority in the final kilometres, while general classification contenders seek to finish safely without losing time.
In the mountains, climbers drive the overall contenders as long as possible, while sprinters fall back into a smaller bunch called the “grupetto” and focus on finishing within the stage time limit.
These priorities are easier to manage when the team has a clear leader. At UAE Team Emirates–XRG, Pogačar, who is favourite to win the men’s tour overall, is the undisputed focus.
But Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe has a more complicated arrangement, naming Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz as co-leaders. This gave them two credible contenders and protection against crashes or illness.
It also creates tactical options where one rider can attack and force rivals to chase while the other conserves energy.
However, shared leadership poses difficult decisions. If both riders remain competitive, who receives the final team support? Who is free to attack?
This tension surfaced after stage six, when Evenepoel complained Lipowitz had not provided a requested lead-out in the contest for bonus seconds: Evenepoel had expected Lipowitz to ride in front of him, shelter him from the wind and deliver him into a stronger position for the sprint.
While the team played down the comments, it showed how differently riders can interpret co-leadership when personal ambitions are at stake.
Politics also operate between teams: rivals cooperate when their interests align but an alliance can quickly dissolve.
Cooperation in the peloton is rarely generous; it only lasts while each team has something to gain.
More than meets the eye
Often, the road eventually settles the peloton hierarchy, when riders lose time or prove weaker in the mountains.
The tour is not simply a battle of who can pedal fastest. It’s a three-week contest over whose ambition matters, who must work, who may conserve energy and who gains the safest and most valuable space on the road.
